Glasgow funk-soul four piece DOPESICKFLY have announced a brand new single featuring legendary Scottish comedian Karen Dunbar. Titled We Are One, the forthcoming release is the result of two years of writing, inspired by connections built during a period which was, for many, a time of intense vulnerability. The forthcoming single follows Red Light which, upon its release earlier this year, was featured as BBC Radio Scotland The Afternoon Show’s ‘Single of the Week’.
It features Scottish comedian Karen Dunbar who, during lockdown, launched a series of online rap workshops to bolster the wellbeing of vulnerable people in her community. After watching the band perform live at the UEFA Euro fanzone in Glasgow Green last year, she reached out to the band to collaborate in a series of outdoor writing workshop events across Glasgow which resulted in Karen’s own verse being written and recorded.
Born from the tangible sense of community that flickered under the shadow of lockdown, the track is the epitome of DOPESICKFLY’s ability to create music that is both infectiously uplifting and lyrically powerful. From funk, jazz and neo-soul to traditional gaelic sounds, the band’s inimitable sound is weaved from a diverse set of backgrounds and cultures spanning over the Scottish Highlands, Indonesia, the Philippines, Ireland and New Orleans, their stories - past and present - molding and shifting to create something completely unique.
Speaking on the track DOPESICKFLY said: “We’re so excited that after two years in the making, We Are One is finally going to be released to the world. We’re really proud of this one and delighted that Karen joined us on the track. It’s become such a positive tool with Karen continuing to use it in her rap workshops, helping to amplify women’s voices and inspire confidence.”
Fresh from playing a summer full of festivals and live shows, including Doune The Rabbit Hole, Edinburgh Jazz Festival and Belladrum Tartan Heart, the band are currently producing a ‘DOPESICKFLY: We Are One’ event in Govan alongside The Glasgow Barons. Held in Govan & Linthouse church on December 20th, the event will feature, a mini cultural orchestra and a finale performance of the track with Karen Dunbar and a group of voices from her workshops. This event is free to attend and will take place in Govan & Linthouse Parish Church, 796 Govan Road, G51 2YL at 7.30pm - no ticket required.
